About
Clare Abbatt lives and works in Northamptonshire. Clare enjoys developing independent projects and exhibitions and the creative collaboration of working to commission.
She has a BA First Class Hons and an MA in Fine Art (University of Northampton), and a BA in English Literature (University College London).
For twelve years Clare worked as an associate educator at Fermynwoods Contemporary Art (reference can be viewed here) and for a few years at Yardley Arts and C2C Social Action (supported by the Arts Council England). In 2022 Clare stopped teaching to concentrate on developing her own work.
Sculpture
Clay, the most basic of materials, in portrait sculpture provides the means by which a person’s likeness and character can be interpreted at that moment in their lives.
Clare's work is sometimes cast in bronze, an ancient process, which brings durability and unique aesthetic qualities. The relatively unpredictable results of raku firing contribute to the character of other pieces. Unfired earth and ash create less permanent sculptures - reflecting our transient presence.
Drawings
Clare’s drawings are made both in response to a sitter and from photographs.
During the Covid lockdown Clare was delighted to be taking part in portrait painter Tom Croft’s project Portraits for NHS Heroes
